3 Chapter 3: Content Writing

Chapter 3: Content Writing

Writing in APA formatting and style does not need to be difficult. Essentially, APA promotes clear and concise writing. Further, and for the most part, the content should be written in the third person. There is room for first person language in the APA 7th edition. However, this book focuses on the basics, and therefore, only third person language will be referenced. Here are some pointers on how to write your content.

  • Be clear and concise in your writing
  • Write in the third person (don’t use words like I, we, us, them, they, when writing in the third person)
  • Paragraphs should be anywhere from 4 to 8 sentences
  • Remember, APA is a research writing format so there should be many in-text citations within the content
  • No repetition is needed
  • Try not to quote (although it is allowed)
  • Instead, try corroborating, synthesizing, or paraphrasing your writing as those are higher cognitive skills
